In this first series of podcasts entitled After Office Hours, Ms. Ryder and Dr. Wostenberg talk about the film Sound of Metal (2019). The film looks at how a thrash metal drummer, Ruben, deals with losing his hearing. Through his journey, Ruben learns what it means to be part of the deaf community by joining a shelter for recovering drug addicts that are also coping with hearing loss. He also joins a local school for the deaf working with elementary school students. While the story centers on Ruben, it also delves into how the hearing loss affects his bandmate and girlfriend, Lou, who has her own demons to workout. The film won an Academy Award for Best Sound and Best Editing and was nominated for Best Actor and Best Picture.
